在设计中寻找意义的时候可以考虑下面的思路。

主题：统一主题或者题目。通往意义的最简单途径之一就是暗示一个恰当的主题。例如，「节水」可以是一个干旱环境的主要主题。「与河建立联系」是景观改造的主题。

符号：通过联系、相似或传统，一些事物或者形式代表着其他的一些东西。例如，修剪的灌木代表着远山，又如树使人联想到保留的和珍贵的自然场所。

隐喻：经常用不相似的物体或概念来暗示对比。例如以流动图案布置的白色鹅卵石隐喻着溪流中的水体。

寓意：在引人注目的或可视的装置中常用文字或者事件象征着寓意。例如，在一个安静的花园里可能有冲突形象产生干扰，目的是要告诉大家一个需要平静共处的道德故事。

在大多数情况下，锐角会引起一些问题。这些点产生张力，狭窄的垂直边感觉上像刀一样让人不舒服，小的尖角难于维护，狭窄的角常常产生结构的损坏。
